Polar Bears During Lockdown.

Now that we are in week three of our total lockdown I think my itchy feet are starting to show! Like me, you might just be starting to think about future travel plans, maybe it’s time to move out of your cosy home and spend a few days getting up close and personal with some polar bears!

While you are planning, Polar Bears International who have their base in Churchill, Manitoba offer a unique look at the bears of Hudson Bay with their polar bear tracker . A fascinating peek at how each of their female collared polar bears travel over the ice, often with their cubs, in search of seals after having endured four or five months with nothing to eat waiting for the bay to freeze over. Each bear will lose around a kilo a day over the summer which is why they sometimes look a bit lean in the autumn.
Only the females are collared because the males have such a huge neck the collar would just slide off.

Hudson Bay is completely frozen over from about mid December until mid June so from mid October the bears start heading north from Churchill looking for the ice and tell tale signs of seals. Every year and every bear is so different adapting their route to where the seals are, some staying relatively close to Churchill and others travelling hundreds of miles.

My trip to Hudson Bay with Arctic Kingdom was one of the best trips I have ever experienced and I have written a little about it and other arctic trips here on my blog travelspastandpresent.blog/category/arctic/.

In the meantime this Live cam of bears is lovely to watch………
